Quilt Construction

All seam allowances are ¼˝.

Appliqué

Appliqué the blocks and borders, except the circles and flowers on the cornerstones for borders 1, 2 and 4. Add these flowers and circles when the quilt top is complete. (See Making the Center Block.) Add embroidered details to the blocks and border if you wish.

For the center block vine, fold the bias vine strip in half, wrong sides together, and place the raw edge toward the center of the block on the drawn line. Sew the vine with a scant ¼˝ seam. Fold the vine over the raw edge and hand stitch in place.

Borders

1. For border 1, sew 24 rectangles 1¼˝ × 2½˝ together along the long edges. Repeat to make 4 borders. Trim 1 pair of borders to 17¾˝. Sew these 2 borders to the sides of the center block. Trim the remaining borders to 17½˝. For border 1 cornerstones, fold the 2½˝ × 2½˝ prairie point squares in half diagonally, and then fold in half again. Baste 2 prairie points to opposite sides of each 2½˝ × 2½˝ cornerstone square. Sew the cornerstones to either end of the 2 remaining borders and then sew them to the quilt top.

2. For border 2, sew the side borders to the quilt top. Sew the cornerstones to the remaining border 2 strips, and then sew them to the top and bottom of the quilt.

3. For border 3, sew the side borders to the quilt top, and then sew the top and bottom borders to the quilt top.
